Hu Kitchen makes a lot of products, and for my first review, I thought it was only fitting to start with my favorite treat: dark chocolate. Since I’m a big fan of dark chocolate, I’m always on the lookout for a good ‘healthy-ish’ bar that I can enjoy.
Why dark chocolate?
- Dark chocolate tends to have less sugar
- It contains more antioxidants.
- It has a higher percentage of actual cacao.
Things I consider when looking for a bar:
- Sweeteners
- Things I avoid: Processed white sugar, corn syrup, sugar alcohols, and artificial sweeteners.
- Things I look for: Coconut sugar, honey, agave, monk fruit, or dates.

Target had these four dark chocolate bars available.
There are also some new items I haven’t tried yet, like the “Dark Chocolate Bites.” I haven’t tried “Chocolate Hunks” either, as I haven’t found them in a store near me yet.
Sensory Section (Taste, Texture, First Impression).
I’ll be ranking these on a scale from -0.1 (worst thing I’ve ever eaten) to 10.1 (best thing I’ve ever eaten).
Hazelnut Butter
First Impression: 6.8 – A nice treat. Not something I’d eat in one sitting, but I’d enjoy it occasionally.
Taste: 6.6 – Good, with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Nice initial bite and hazelnut flavor up front.
Texture: 7.1 – Firm but creamy.

Crunchy Mint
Taste: 7.8 – Enjoyable mint flavor, not too sweet, with a true dark chocolate taste.
Texture: 8.2 – Solid chocolate with delightful crunch throughout each bite.
First Impression: 8.0 – Very enjoyable! I’d seek this one out. I’d have to hide it after a couple of squares to avoid eating the whole bar.

Cashew Butter
First Impression: 7.8 – Good overall flavor and texture. The cashew flavor was subtle; I wish it had a stronger sweet and creamy cashew taste.
Taste: 7.2 – Great flavor, milder dark chocolate.
Texture: 7.7 – Creamy and smooth.

Simple Dark Chocolate
First Impression: 8.5 – For a low-sugar, 70% dark chocolate bar, it was very good. I really enjoyed it.
Taste: 8.3 – A solid dark chocolate bar.
Texture: 8.0 – Firm and dense.

Cost Per Bar
Average cost is about $6 per bar. It is on the higher end for sure, but great ingredients and nice thick pieces.

Update: My local Kroger grocery store now carries Hunks and a larger selection of Hu Kitchen dark chocolate bars. I’ll most likely do an additional review on more of these dark chocolate bars at a later date.
